Important Facts about Fair and Festivals of Himachal Pradesh

  • The culture fair Minjar is celebrated at Chogan ground in the month of july at Chamba. Minjar locally language means Maize tresses.
  • Mani Mahesh fair- Chamba
  • Raja sahil varman the king of Chamba had defeated the strong tribal Turukash and after his victory, joyous people of Chamba offered Minjar to the king and he gave them Asharfis and since then Minjar fair wa started to commemorate this victory.
  • Bharmaur Jatra district chamba in the month of August
  • Chhitriari Jattra in district Chamba in the month of September
  • Dushehra of kullu is celebrated in Dhalpur ground . Sheep ,buffalo ,fish , hen and pig are offered as a sacrifice in this festival . The rath yatra of Lord Raghunath ji in Kullu starts only on the arrival of the goddess Hidimba. 160 deities participat in this festival and celebrated in 7 days
  • In 1651 AD ,Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu ,in order to avoid the curse of a Brahmin , installed the idol of Raghunathji on throne which he brought from Ayodhya
  • Ghantal festival is celebrated in mid june in Lahaul at Guru Ghantal Gompa.
  • Ladaracha mela ,a commercial , culture and religious fair attended by traders from Ladakh , Bushahr , Lahaul and Spiti ,held in the month of july / aug. at Kaza in Spiti.
  • Independence day celebration is organized at Keylong (Lahaul and Spiti) on 15 august and it is popularly known as Traditional Diwas.
  • International fair shivaratri is celebrated in Mandi in Paddal ground.
  • The deity leads the procession in Mandi Shivaratri fair is Madho (Krishna) Rai.
  • According to the leagend ,on the death of all 18 sons of Raja of Mandi Suraj Singh , in 1648 AD he handed over his entire administration to Madho(Krishna )Rai and since then shivaratri fair is celebrated in district mandi

  • Mata Badri Devi Mela is celebrated in Jogindernager in Mandi

  • The trade fair Lavi is celebrated in the month of November at Rampur Bushar. It is a trade fair. The famous variety of horses are traded during this fair is Chumurthi.
  • Fag fair is celebrated in Rampur Bushahr
  • Shippi fair (bull fight fair) is held in the middle of may at Mashobra near Shimla. It held in the praise of Lord Shiva. This fair was firstly started by Rana of Koti.
  • Jagra is a whole night festival performed to propitiate the local deity in which local people gather around the temple ,it is popular in dirctict Shimla hills.
  • Rohru fair , a religious and cultural fair in april at Rohru is dedicated to local deity Shikhnu
  • Bhunda ceremony is held after every 12 years.
  • A person of ‘Beda caste’ is put on the rope in the bhunda ceremony and this caste is one of the Old Nag Caste
  • Bhunda symbolizes the victory of ‘Khash ‘ Over Nag or Kol.
  • Nalwar fair of was started in Bilspur in 1889 AD by Shimla hill state Superindent W.Goldstein during the rule of Raja Amar Chand . It is cattel trade fair .Also celebrated in Jogindernagar , Sundernagar , Karsog.
  • I n Bilaspur ,before 1961 ,Nalwari was held at Sandu ka Maidan but today it was organized in Luhnu Ground . It is celebrated in 7 days

  • Naina devi fair held in the month of august at Naina Devi Temple in distt. Bilaspur
  • Phulech is a festival of Flowers and celebrated in Kinnaur
  • Shregratan festival is celebrated in Lahaul.
  • Dolru is a new year festival celebrated in Bharmour.
  • Renuka fair ,a religious fair celebrated in the month of November in district Sirmaur
  • State level Holi festival celebrated from 17th to 20th March at Sujanpur Tihra.

  • Baisakhi mela ,a religious fair is celebrated on 13th April at Kaleshwar near Jawalamukhi in Kangra

  • Budhi dewali ,signifying victory of khash over Nag/ Kol is celebrated one month after the regular Dewali in Nirmand (Kullu)
  • On the pattern of Buddhi Dewali, by the name koli –re – dewali is celebrated in Kullu
  • Lal chand prarthi in his book ‘Kulut Desh Ki Kahani’ has described the celebration of Dewali due to Khash Nag Struggle

  • Suhi Mela is celebrated in Chamba . It was celebrated in the memory of Nayana Devi of Chamba who sacrified herself to bring water to Chamba town. Only children and women participated in this fair
